Anyone who knows me knows that my love of reading has been lifelong. One of my earliest memories is reading the The Pokey Little Puppy with my mom. When I first found out that I was pregnant with my son Jalen, the first items I ran out and brought were books. I believe that reading is something that should span the scope of one's entire life. Sitting and reading to my growing belly while pregnant, as well as holding my tiny human in my arms and reading to him when he was just days old are memories I will always cherish.
As a preschool educator I know the importance of early literacy as well as the importance of representation in stories for young children. This led to the launch of Little Brown People Publishing, dedicated to publishing children's book that represent African American children. With that, I am proud to share the release of my very first children's book Can Brown Girls Be Unicorns? written under the pseudonym J.J.Sam.
Can Brown Girls Be Unicorns?
Can Brown Girls Be Unicorns?
Five year old Jayla has one dream; to be a magical unicorn when she grows up that flies around the world bringing joy to all the sad people in the world.
Her classmate Sally has a theory on why that is absolutely impossible which snatches away Jayla's joy.
But only for a little while.
Jayla's mom uses this teachable moment to introduce Jayla to the magic that comes with being a brown girl every day of her life.
